Summary of the Mayoral Office Visit | Campus Midlands
- 8 of us had the privilege of being welcomed into the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council House to meet the Mayoress.
- We began with a comprehensive tour of the council house, which felt like a museum, hosting an array of artefacts from the borough of Solihull. From the walls adorned with portraits of mayors—past and present—to various pieces of art and sculptures crafted by members of the local community, the space reflected the rich history and culture of the borough.
- We then had the opportunity to sit down with the Mayoress in her office and hear about her journey, as well as the challenges she has faced on the road to her current position. It became apparent that, like the best leaders, she did not seek to be at the head of the table. Instead, she was initially approached to consider the role of councillor in recognition of her immense efforts in the humanitarian sector, which eventually led to her election as mayor of the borough.
- She spoke candidly about the daily challenges she faces. While there is still a long way to go, hearing her story gave me hope that positive change is unfolding before our eyes.
- Before leaving her office to visit the council chamber, we were given the unique opportunity to try on the historic mayoral gown, which has been worn by mayors for over 75 years and can be seen in their portraits spanning decades!
- I—and no doubt my fellow attendees—found the visit to be an incredibly eye-opening experience. It made me reflect on how I could apply myself to benefit society in a more political context and how we, as a community, could be more politically engaged, supporting those in positions of power for the betterment of society.
