We’ve been given the opportunity to contribute to something greater than us. Undeniably, meeting with a wide variety of people, with different perspectives, ideas and knowledge to offer has been the highlight of this experience. We feel as though we are part of a community, working together to be the change we want to see in world. Though it initially seemed daunting to engage in public speaking and debate ideas, the GMYCA is a safe space where all viewpoints are accepted and validated.

As part of the Leadership Team, it feels nourishing to be part of a close-knit team working together, knowing your hardwork and effort is having a direct impact on those in power. Our weekly meetings discussing possible subjects for the monthly GMYCA meetings are not only informative and educational but also rewarding as we are given the chance to share our individual experiences with a group of understanding and supportive young people. Being part of the Leadership Team means we are offered opportunities to host and co-host GMYCA meetings, allowing us to support our fellow youths through informing and influencing the topics discussed and ensuring it is relevant to our own experiences and needs.

We are looking forwards to hosting the Deputy Mayor Kate Green in our upcoming October meeting, in which we will engage in critical debate and real life issues we face as young people. As October is also Black History Month, we hope to have an enlightening talk, educating about and celebrating Black culture and history, along with local members of our community who deserve more recognition due to their actions in everyday life. November brings even more opportunities and accessibility with the Mayor Bev Craig attending our session to hear about our experiences and answer our questions relating to her policy and plans for Manchester.

Time spent contributing to the GMYCA may feel like a lot at moments, especially with school and external pressure. Yet, it always feels worth it with the knowledge that our voices hold genuine meaning and power within the GMYCA. In a society that is growing more and more accustomed to disregarding the views of the youth, the GMYCA is a wonderful and educational opportunity to make a difference.
