On 29th October, members of the Islamic Society of Britain Campus were invited by Friends of the Earth and Afzal Khan to attend an event in Parliament titled “Championing Muslim Communities in the Climate Conversation: COP29 and Environmental Action.”

The gathering brought together various groups, including Muslim Aid, Somalians for Sustainability, Friends of the Earth, the Muslim Council of Britain, and many others.

Afzal Khan opened the panel, emphasising our duty as Muslims to engage in conversations and actions on sustainable practices and environmental awareness. A common sentiment emerged: that education in schools and universities is essential to equip future leaders to carry the torch, working to secure and protect our natural environment.

Representatives from Muslim Aid shared insights into their projects, highlighting how the increasingly evident impacts of climate change deepen divides across the world. Their message urged us not only to listen but to respond with both heart and hands.

Friends of the Earth stressed the importance of holding local councils and the government accountable to ensure decisions are made for the benefit of future generations. They reminded us all that while policies matter, collective individual actions are also essential to drive positive change.

This event in Parliament marks a promising step forward, yet much remains to be done. Muslim communities must recognise and respond urgently to the mounting challenges of climate change—a reminder that resonates more frequently and intensely.

Our thanks to Friends of the Earth and Afzal Khan for the invitation.
